FIVE HENS STORY

MY GRANDMOTHER WAS A COOK FOR BETHLEHEM STEEL AND INSTILLED IN ME THE LOVE OF FINE DINING AND FARMERS' MARKETS. BUT IT WAS MY MOTHER, WHO HAS A DEGREE IN NUTRTITION, WHO TAUGHT ME HOW TO BAKE AND THE VALUE OF NATURAL FOODS.

IN MY BAKING, I USE LOCAL AND ORGANIC WHEN POSSIABLE, AND I ONLY USE CANE SUGAR. I ALSO PICK OR GROW MUCH OF WHAT I USE. FOR EXAMPLE, THE CHERRIES IN MY SCONES AND PIES COME FROM MY GARDEN OR A LOCAL U-PICK FARM. PLUS, MY WONDERFUL HENS AND THE HENS AT WALNUT GROVE FARMS SUPPLY THE EGGS.

MY LOVE OF FOOD AND INTEREST IN PHOTOGRAPHY LED ME INTO MAGAZINE PUBLISHING, WORKING WITH TALENTED CHEFS ON FOOD SHOOTS, AND FREELANCE WORK FOR THE WALL STREET JOURNAL. I ALSO PRODUCED PHOTOGRAPHY AND DID RESEARCH FOR SPECIALTY COOKBOOKS. IN BETWEEN I HAVE WORKED IN KITCHENS AND FOOD SERVICE .

I JOINED A LOCAL CSA, WHERE I LATER TOOK PHOTOS FOR THE NEWSLETTER AND DEVELOPED RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE FARMERS. THIS EVENTUALLY HELPED ME SECURE AS THE MARKET MANAGER AT THE LOCAL FARMERS' MARKET. TOGETHER, THESE EXPERIENCES GAVE ME THE KNOWLEDGE OF FOOD AND RESPECT FOR FARMING I HAVE TODAY.

MY MOTHER is A BIG FAN OF JULIA CHILD, AND MY FIRST WORDS AS A TODDLER WERE THE SIGNATURE CLOSING LINE ON THE FRENCH CHEF. SO, IN THE IMMORTAL WORDS OF JULIA, "BON APPÉTIT!"
